I have a problem where hidden shares are being removed by some unknown
process. I have checked that the "AutoShareServer" key is not present in the
registry.

The machine is running Windows 2000 Server - it is not part of a domain.

Is there a chance that some policy is removing these shares?

We tried rebuilding Windows on the machine, problem was there from the
start. We then tried removing the machine from the network, rebuilding it.
Everything was fine until we plugged the machine into the network again -
then the shares disapperead.

Does anybody have a good idea for me?

It could happen through a Group Policy.

Have you checked with GPResult or RSOP (if you
can use Win2003)

Sounds interesting, but doesn't a group policy come from a domain controller?
This machine is a stand-alone server in a workgroup.

Not always; there is also Local Group Policy or LGPOs.

I have seen a couple post about similar things today. It was suggested by
one guy that a virus (or maybe some sort of spyware) is doing this. Maybe
you have a virus wild on the network that infects the machine as quick as
you can expose it to the rest of the LAN.

....just a guess...
