So the wife and I were staring at the bliss.bmp wallpaper
(the rolling grassy hills scene that's the default on XP)
and my wife noticed that near the lower left corner, where there
appears to be a very dark horizontal wedge, there appears
to be some lettering. It's fairly obscured, but when I load
the image into Photoshop and play with it, ".com" and the
letter "E" really stand out.

OK, before you all think we've simply misplaced our meds,
I checked it on several of my XP machines and noticed the
same thing. My display is a stretched 1440x900 laptop, but
I've seen it elsewhere.

Any ideas on what the message is ?

Sounds like a web address. :-)

FYI, this not on my copy of bliss.bmp.

Check the file date information for the file (create, modified, etc.).
For me the "modified" date conforms to when I recall I loaded this
machine with XP.

My hunch is that this is not a problem worth worrying about. There are
ways to hid messages in graphics files, but making them visible to the
eye as in your case is not the way the bad guys do it.
