to those with a new HP...

Go to...

Services -> Service this sevice -> HP xxxxx Series Toolbox

Then right click on the the window top bar and select "About"

New window appears with a crossed spanner and screwdriver icon.

Control double click on the icon an a new message appears

"This program is for troubleshooting and will modify your dervice blah blah"

Click continue and there is a new list of about 20 options that can be set.
Take care what you mess with as I guess some of these may cause problems.

I haven't investigated them all but some examples..

"Black under printing <on>". Sounds like that might save some ink if you
don't mind slightly less dense black .

One option is named "Flight Recorder" I wonder what that does. One is called
"Low on ink warning"

Take care.

Hi,

The Flight Recorder is just a debug program which will create a record
of printing. From that, you may be able to find the problem. Years
ago, a tech rep mentioned it as the next step, though we solved the
problem before using it.

I turn off the low ink warning, since it starts nattering at me
hundreds of pages before it is really empty. Interestingly, is seems
to apply only to black ink. I still get warnings about the color
cartridge, but for some reason that seem to be a much less extreme
problem.

Anyone figured out if the HP 1100d has this setting? It started
complaining about low ink when the black went down to 25%! That's
still about 300-500 pages left. I finally put masking tape over the
blinking ink lights, but I still get the HP toolbox with the blinking
! in the system tray.

Thanks for posting this. I've got an HP 940c connceted to a Windows ME
system, with the downloaded HP driver for this machine under Windows ME.
I futzed with this routine and was able toe make it go.

With this HP driver, the routine is the same up to the point where
there's the crossed wrench ("spanner" in Brit) and screwdriver. My
toolbox doesn't have this picture, but has a picture of something else
(I think that it was a printer in a new window). Ctrl Doubleclick here
produces a strange defective window to the left of the screen -- like an
error message box without any innards. But down in the System Tray,
there's a new HP icon -- clicking on that produces the "This program is
for..." statement and the menu.
