I am working on a computer that had a number of spyware programs. I used AVG
8.0 to remove them. Prior to using AVG my network card would not pull a dns
address, even if I manually entered a dns address, DNS lookup was not
working. I attempted to load XP service pack 3 hoping to correct the network
issue. SP 3 will not load and gives an error cannot copy clbcatex.dll and
clbcatq.dll. I searched the computer and cannot see those files in the system
32 directory. I went to another computer and those files are there. I put
them on my thumb drive and was going to copy them to the defective computer.
Whenever I put the thumb drive in the infected computer I cannot see those
two dll files. I have even zipped them and still cannot see those files. I
have never seen anything like this. Help

Here's what I would try: Boot to Safe Mode with Networking, open
Internet Options and remove any ActiveX component that's damaged, or
doesn't have information in the Properties. I recently had one that
looked like a McAfee component, but every time I tried to read its
Properties, Internet Options and IE would close. But I was able to
right-click it, and click "Delete" to remove it.

Then get virus definition updates, and run a complete scan. Also run
Superantispyware, or one of the other similar programs; you need to do
at least two scans, or download David H. Lipman's MULTI_AV.EXE from:
http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe
http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

See if the files are then visible.

Elmo;

How do I remove the activeX components. Also I cannot get to the McAfee web
site. That is why I downloaded AVG. But I cannot get to their update site
either. The same happens when I try to update AdWare. I can download the
initial program but no updates.

How do I remove the activeX components?

- Open Internet Properties.
- On the General tab page, click the "Settings" button.
- Click "View Objects".
- View Details so you can see what components are damaged, unknown, etc.
- Right-click each Object, click Properties and see their intent.
- Click Delete if you don't want them. Don't delete any that work with
your phone modem; you may have to reinstall it to get online if you do.
You don't need to remove codecs either, though I guess a "codec" could
be malware too..

The malware is preventing entry to those sites, I suspect. Safe Mode
with Networking, along with the ActiveX component removal _might_ allow
you to get the updates.
