Hidden Device

How do I remove a hidden hardware which has been fisically
removed from the machine but the software is still present
and therefore conflicting with the new one.
In Windows 2000 pro there is "Add/Remove Hardware" program
in the control panel which allows the removal of such
hidden devices but in the WinXP there is only Add a new
Hardware which can be found in the control panel.

Looking forward for an answer.

.I had the same thing occur with an old useless modem.

The ONLY thing that got rid of this in Add and REmove
(trying to remove it caused computer to crash EVERY time)
was to clean install the OS.
