Did a stupid thing. Not sure how I did it, but I am fairly sure I created a
hidden adminitrator in my user accounts. I need to find it and restore it
because I need those files. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi

Have you checked via Control Panel>User Accounts?

Look for them under the name for the account you created.
C:\Documents and Settings\

It sounds as if you were using the built-in Administrator
account and then created another account that's a Computer
Administrator. As soon as you create that second account the
built-in Adminstrator account becomes hidden. Take a look here
for more info:

How to login as Administrator in Windows XP
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/admins.htm

If you want to recover the files from the built-in Adminstrator
account you'd have to follow the procedure outlined here:

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile

Good luck

I think I found it, but my access is denied for the documents folder, and of
course, I cannot drag it to the shared folders area either. I don't believe
I set a password for it, but it has been a while.
Thanks.

Nepatsfan's assumption is probably right. If still no joy and as long as
encryption isn't involved as a local administrator you can take
ownership. Explorer|"folder"|File|Properties|Security|Advanced|Owner and
take ownership.

Tried his method couldn't open with any of my usual passwords. Went into
bios (?) and USER Passwords is not one I can choose --cursor just skips
over it. Also I do not understand this:
Explorer|"folder"|File|Properties|Security|Advanced|Owner
Thanks, J

Windows passwords are not stored in bios they are encrypted in the SAM
database.

What I mentioned was a method to navigate to the folder (Windows Explorer)
in question and take ownership.

Hi. I know you meant as a way to navigate but I do not understand you.
Explorer|"folder"|File|Properties|Security|Advanced|Owner. What is this
Explorer? Where is it? If I go to My computer and then windows folder there
is no "file", etc. Obviously if I am stupid enough to lose my account I am
too stupid to understand tech talk. Could you give me easier instructions?

Thanks,
J

Navigate to the folder that you get "Access Denied" then from the menu;
File|Properties|Security|Advanced|Owner and take ownership

Hi again. When I went to the folder that denies me access and followed your
suggestion: Explorer|"folder"|File|Properties|Security|Advanced|Owner . But,
when I get to "security" it does not take me to "owner," It takes me to
"advanced" which then lets me choose security and settings for file sharing.
There is no 'owner." As I said earlier, I cannot drag that file I want to
share , it will not allow me to.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
J
