hibernation vs. staying on

I usually use my notebook 4 times a day, for a hour or
two at a time. Is it better to leave the machine on if
there's only going to be a couple hours of off time or
put it in hibernation?

Why not just turn it off? If in hibernation, it uses much less battery power
then when on. (Unless of course you are using AC power)..

You've confused hibernation with standby. Hibernation
saves all ram contents to file on the hard drive and
powers the computer off. A computer can stay in
hibernation mode forever.

Standby, however, does go into "lower power mode" and will
not stay that way forever obviously. It can stay in that
mode for quite a long time, tho, your mileage may vary, up
to weeks at a time.

And standby mode is very quick...mine takes 3 seconds to
go into standby and 1 second to resume to logon prompt.
Hibernation, by contrast, can take as long to enter as
shutting down the computer would take...it just preserves
your current system state...all open apps and windows.
