Hello,

I'm working over Remote Desktop on a XP SP2 machine.
Whem I'm finished with working I want the machine to hibernate but the
hibernate and standby options are not available in Windows Security.

Is there any way to hibernate the PC via Remote Desktop?

thank you, Shrek

Hi Shrek,

To hibernate a computer remotely you should make sure the target computer
can be hibernated when you log on locally. The you can connect to the
Windows XP computer via Remote Desktop, press Ctrl+Alt+End, click the Shut
Down button, select hibernate and click OK.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Hello,

thank you for your answer.

I'm able to hibernate the computer locally.
I'm not mapping keyboard shortcuts to the target PC normally.
I tried it to test the behavior and Ctrl+Alt+End opens the same "Windows
Security" dialog I described below.

I use the button "Windows Security" from the Start-Menu on the target
machine, but the modes standby and hibernation are not active so I can't
select them.

That's because the Welcome Screen is enabled on the remote
computer. You can disable the Welcome Screen by doing the
following:

Go to Start -> Control Panel.
Double click User Accounts.
Click on "Change the way users log on or off".
Remove the check mark from the box next to "Use the Welcome
Screen".
Click on the "Apply Options" button.
Close User Accounts.

Keep in mind that users of the remote computer will now see the
Windows 2000 style log on and off boxes.

If you want to keep using the Welcome Screen on the remote
computer then you have two options.

Option 1.
On the Local Resources page of Remote Desktop Connection, make
sure key combinations are applied to the remote computer.
Hit the Alt + F4 keys from the local computer.
This should bring up the "Turn off Computer" dialog.
Either hit the Shift key to change Standby to Hibernate or
simply hit the H key.

Option 2.
Create a desktop shortcut on the remote computer.
Enter the following in the Target box.

%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState

Name the shortcut Hibernate.
Right click on the new shortcut and hit the "Change Icon"
button.
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll.
I use the button on the bottom row that matches the one for
Turn Off.

Good luck
