I've been handling Windows XP for quite a while now, and I am a littl
curious about the 'hibernation' setting.

I am curious, if there is a way to disable this setting? Every time
leave my programs running (Example: AIM, mIRC, and so on,) and m
computer goes into hibernation, those programs listed abov
dissconect.

Is there a way to stop this from happening?

Thanks in advance,

Start -> Help and Support.
Search on "hibernation".
By telling you how to turn it on, the help also alludes how to turn it off.

Hint: power options.

In Control Panel, select Power Options.

Note that this is (rather surprisingly) a per-user setting, so you
may need to log on to each us ad make the change if you're concerned
about the machine running unattended with those users.

Yes, I've found it. But now it tells me to do it in "Toshiba Powe
Saver," which when I tried, it won't load up. It gives me an hou

Hi,

Hibernation is essentially the same as shutting down, except the contents of
ram are copied to the hiberfil.sys file prior to powering off. So, of course
the programs are disconnected. The solution is to not use hibernate but
rather use standby to keep these programs functioning.

So how did "Toshiba" get involved in this conversation since you never did
mention WHAT computer you have? Apparently you have a Toshiba computer and
they have some bastardized, er, customized version of Windows that uses
Toshiba's control program for power saving options. Guess you'll have to
contact Toshiba regarding their non-standard Windows power options program.
What happens when you use the Power Options applet in Control Panel?

When I double click on the Toshiba Power Saver, it gives me an hour
glass like its loading, then does nothing. I will not load.

So the Power Options applet under Control Panel has been renamed to Toshiba
Power Saver? Or are you using some other utility provided by Toshiba
instead of the Power Options applet under Control Panel? The *standard*
Power Options applet is powercfg.cpl (under %windir%\system32), so you might
try running that one, but then Toshiba might've replaced it with their
paranoid branded and customized version of the applet.

If the only power options applet that you can get at is Toshiba's then it
looks like their installation is corrupt. You could try an in-place upgrade
(aka Repair) of Windows using its installation CD but then maybe Toshiba
didn't give you a real Microsoft install CD for Windows and instead you are
stuck with a disk image restore CD or image file in a hidden partition that
will wipe out the partition's contents to restore the image. If Toshiba's
manual doesn't explain how to do a Repair of Windows then you'll have to
call them, or wait until someone has your specific model (which has yet to
be mentioned) and knows what Toshiba provides (or does not provide) for
repairing Windows.
