Hibernating when in use?

I'm using my wifes laptop downloading a file when suddenly the machine
starts to go into hibernation. I know how to turn the hibernation
feature off but surely this should not be necessary? Is there any way
to stop this from happening when the machine is in use?

Hello,

Did you accidentally press a shortcut key?

Another possibility was that the battery level was very low at the time of
hibernation.
No I didn't press a shortcut key.

Sounds like the Operating System doesn't consider downloading as
'doing something' and since you aren't pressing keys probably assumes you
aren't using the system. You might try optioning the thing to wait longer
before auto-hibernating if it isn't the battery situation mentioned
previously. The lid is still open, isn't it?

Check Control Panel -> Power Options. Look at the current Power
Scheme to see if it's configured to place the laptop in
Hibernation Mode after a certain amount of time. The next time
you want to download a file, change the Power Scheme to one
that doesn't invoke Hibernation.

Good luck

Oh yeah, a further question. What is controling the hibernation you
mention the laptop BIOS or Windows?
