Hello, I just bought a new canon digital camera that is able to take video.
I am having difficulty downloading the video but not the still images. Every
time my camera is connected to my hp laptop a bubble pops up saying that I
need to install a hi speed usb host controller. There are only two ports,
should this make a difference? Where would I get a hi speed usb host
controller?

USB ports come in two flavors:
USB1: slow, and older
USB2: a lot faster(high speed), and newer
Most hardware now want USB 2. But if you have USB 1, they use it
automatically but obviously it will be much slower.
In your case, apparently you have USB1, your camera wants USB2 and will not
allow you to use USB 1 (for good reason, it would take a long time to
download video via USB 1).
You can do this easily if you have a desktop computer.
You purchase a USB2 card (about $30.00), and insert it in your computer. Not
much of a problem, follow the instructions. Not a big deal really.
Then reboot. XP will find it automatically. Then you just connect the camera
to the new USB 2 port on your card..
However, you are on a laptop. A bigger problem here in term of cost. But
don't despair. Take your laptop to a store like CompUSA or Best By or
Circuit City and ask to get an external laptop card with USB 2 connection
for a laptop. And bring your camera with you so you can test, in the store,
if this will work or not.
