When I connect my external harddrive I get a message that my drive would run
faster if connected to a Hi-speed USB hub controller. And also that I done
have one.
I never used to get this only after reformatting a couple of weeks back
What is it? what do I do?
Any help appreciated

Are you positive you have a USB 2.0 port on your computer?
Device Manager - Universal Serial Bus Controllers --> see any under there
witht he word 'enhanced' in their name?

if your high speed bus is 2.0
then it might be plugged into
a 1.0 port on your motherboard.

you might consider a usb 2.0
pci card to bypass the motherboard
standard usb port.

If this happens after formatting, it's most likely that you didn't install
the motherboard chipset drivers required to run the USB chips at 2.0 speeds,
or didn't install SP2.

Have you installed all the drivers for all the hardware by visiting each
hardware components manufacturer's web page and downloading the latest
driver for your component/OS combination and installing it after you did the
format/clean install?

Windows XP does *not* include the drivers for every possible piece of
hardware on that CD, nor does it contain the latest version of them or
download them/install them for you. When performing a clean installation
like you have - it is best that you have these drivers saved to external
media before you even start to format the system - that way you have a good
count of everything (what it is, etc.) and you can easily install of that
after you have formatted and installed Windows XP afresh so that the
hardware will correctly interface with the software.

This is more than likely a BIOS problem, check you have enabled high
speed usb in the bios

So someone has a fully working system... They decide to format and install
the operating system afresh and now some hardware is giving them trouble and
it is 'more than likely a BIOS problem'?

It worked before they formatted. They make no mention of updating the
system BIOS. It doesn't work after they formatted and installed the OS
anew. Sounds more like a driver issue - most likely the motherboard chipset
driver has not been installed from the motherboard chipset manufacturer.

I say a BIOS Issue becaus a lot of motherboards need to have full/high
speed usb enabled in the BIOS in order for USB 2.0 to work. However I
take your point that it could well be a chipset issue.
