I'm probably going to have to look at the server for this.

I'm thinking some of this is starting from this problem:

I had a BDC that I created while doing some tests. I
disconnected the BDC but I can't seem to delete it from the
Active Directory Users and Computers.

How do I delete such an item? Am I going to have go into
the registry and manually do it?

There are no PDCs/BDCs in Active Directory - only domain controllers. Is the
server you refer to still operational? If so, connect it to the network and
run dcpromo to demote it - then you should be able to remove it entirely. If
not, you'll need to see MS KB 216498

The server is gone. I just called it BDC because that's what it
was set up as. I think I can reinstall Win2k and get it back up,
I'm sure I can, but it'll take more time than I want to commit to
it. And I have a couple other issues I need to get worked out,
so I'm just going to work them one at a time, hoping the first
one will fix the other ones.

I'll post back and let you know what's happened. Thanks!

If you think it would be quicker to reinstall the server then
dcpromo, let me know! <g>

Not a DNS question, but rather an AD question. Either way, this should help.
Follow these steps (it applies to this too) to remove the server object out
of AD. I'm assuming you already deleted it out of the Domain Controllers OU.

Hi - it won't do you any good to reinstall the server (and may cause more
harm than good) as the SID won't match the old one. Follow the steps in the
article I posted....shouldn't be too hard, esp as this server probably had
no FSMO roles to seize anyway.

That problem was fixed. Thanks!

Question, though about your comment about SID. There's supposed
to be a tool to change SIDs, make them whatever you want them to
be. I think it's located at www.sysinternals.com. Not that I'm looking
into this prospect, but I am curious about it. It seems like there'd
have to be some registry editing done though to finalize the use of that
tool. Do you have any comments about it? Tried it?

NewSID is a very good tool. It's been around for a long time. No, you don't
need to do manual registry cleanup. Just run newsid /a and reboot.

Just to comment, I'm not a fan of sid changers. I guess it works ok for
client machines prior to joining them to the domain. I would rather use
Sysprep and then Ghost the image for roll outs. Don't use that SID changer
on a DC. Worked on NT4 dc's but not with AD.

It looks everything is fixed with the server. The other problem
is with an XP machine. I've posted a message in the
microsoft.public.windowsxp.setup_deployment and it really
should be in a networking issues group, but if you guys want
to take a crack at it, I'll happily post it back here. It's 100% an
XP problem with FTP, with some services that are running or
should be running but can not be started up.
