Can someone please kindaly help me .

I have a big problem with my HDD. I am working under XP pro SP2.

What I done:
I remove all permission access on my HDD for the group
“EVERYONE”. Now I know that was a very bad mistake. When I
done this change I did know that I was in this “EVERYONE”
group that mind , I cann also not anymore acces the HDD too.

After this operation:
When I try to start up my computer I bekomm the following message
“autochk program not found”

and after a blue screen with the following message :
“STOP: c000021a Fatal System Error
process terminated unexpectedly with a status
of 0xc0000022 (0x00000000 0x00000000) system has been shut down”

My question:

What kan I do to change the acces permission to the HDD with out
permission ?
I that possible that I remove also my permission because I am the
Administrator of this HDD ?

For soon help thanks in advance,

Norman

Hi Norman,

Try any of the following:
1. You can try to boot to safe mode. Hold F8 on Startup and from the Menu
select Last Known Good Configuration
2. You can try to start Recovery Console directly from the Windows XP
Professional operating system CD. Wait for the Windows XP Professional
Setup program to display the Welcome to Setup screen (this might take a few
moments). Choose To repair a Windows XP Professional installation by
pressing R.
Type the number corresponding to the Windows XP Professional installation
that you want to use, and then press ENTER. You must type a number when
prompted, even if only a single Windows XP Professional installation exists.
If you press ENTER without typing a number, Windows XP Professional restarts
the computer.
At the prompt, enter the password for the local Administrator account so
that you can access the contents of the local hard disk. Recovery Console
accepts only the password for the local Administrator account. If you do not
enter the correct password within three attempts, Windows XP Professional
denies access and restarts the computer.

Donna

If you have another computer running XP/W2000 you can place that hard drive
as a slave/secondary drive into that computer and change permissions on the
locked out drive for default operating system accounts only such as
users/everyone/administrators. You could also do the same on your computer
with a parallel install of the operating system which could be removed when
you are done. Another option is to boot from your install cdrom and do a
repair install of Windows XP which will require that you have the product
key as would a parallel installation. A repair install would require that
you install the service pack and then all security updates when done as they
will be removed in the process. If you have any files encrypted with EFS and
have not exported your EFS certificate/private key to a password protected
..pfx file you will lose permanent access to those EFS encrypted files if you
do a new installation of XP Pro where you format your system partition. ---

Hi Steve and thank you for your help,

When you say that I have to "change permissions on the
locked out drive for default operating system accounts only such as
users/everyone/administrators" , do I have to edit the ACLs to change
permission ? And if is the case how can I proced to do it (I know that
is not a very easy operation ) ?

You would have to configure the ntfs permissions in the properties/security
page of a the folder. For XP Pro you would need to make sure that simple
file sharing is disable if it is not already though I assume it was if you
already have changed permissions. The link below will explain more. To start
with you would want to make sure that the everyone group has
read/list/execute permissions to the root-drive folder, the documents and
settlings folder, the program files folder, the Windows folder, and the
Windows\system32 folder. For the same folders you want the administrators
group and system to have full control. Then make sure that each user has
full control to their profile folder under documents and settings. You need
to be logged onto the computer as an administrator and if you are denied
access to any folder you will first have to take ownership of the folder as
explained in the link below to be able to set permissions if they are not
what you need. Most likely you will not need to change permissions on a
users profile folder unless the user can not logon to the computer. ---
