Re~Silient

All access to CHM files causes the same hh.exe and itss.dll errors.

Unfortunately I also have all the critical and recommended updates (such as
Q323255, which was superceeded with Q811630, also Q810847 which reporst that
it breaks HTML help engine, etc).

I'm pretty sure I have all of them.... started with WinXP SP1, then applied
everything that appeared after in Windows Update... don't where else to
look.

Any ideas?

Also if this isn't the best newsgroup for this question, please advise so I
can also post in the appropriate ng.

Here are a few things to try:

1) Use MJ's Help Diagnostics to check that hh.exe, itss.dll, and the
other HTML Help runtime components are properly installed and
registered.

http://helpware.net/downloads/index.htm#MJs

2) Delete the file hh.dat, which you should find in the following
subdirectory:

\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML
Help

This is a database file that saves such session information as the
window position and favorites for the HTML Help viewer. If the file
has been corrupted then .chm files may behave erratically. Windows
will automatically re-create the file when you next open any .chm
file.

3) Empty your Temporary Internet Files (TIF) directory. A full TIF
directory can cause HTML Help files to misbehave.

4) See the following pages for further guidance on how to resolve help
problems on Windows XP:

Thanks Pete,

I already looked for the hh.dat... couldn't find one.

TIF emptied (cleaned out as this is the base image for my VMWare systems, so
if I fix one I fix all of them)... but nothing newsworthy there, but I'll
check again.

Good thing you mentioned Doug's site... I was actually looking for that
link....

I'll report back.

Update:

Removing the hh.dat file did the trick on all 4 systems.

Odd thing is yesterday I looked for the hh.dat, and didn't find any on the
problematic system (even with everything set to be displayed... but this
morning using windows explorer, found it).

Thanks again
