Hesitation in Activating Programs

I am running XP Professional, Athelon 1.3 MH, with 384 mb of ram single, independent computer not on any network. I am having to wait about 6 to 7 seconds each time I click on a folder or a file such as word perfect, excel, etc.. Any ideas why the hesitation activating the programs? I run Norton anti-virus on a regular basis and remove temp files. Confused. Need HELP.
 
Hi Brent,

I hope that's an Athlon 1.3Gz, not MH <g>

Start/run msconfig, go to the startup tab and disable everything Norton, and
I mean everything. Click apply/ok and reboot - does the same thing still
happen? Or do they open much faster?
