1. unplug the cable that connects your computer to the modem, reboot your
computer
2. enable ICF (the internet connection firewall)

my column on enabling ICF is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/bowman/november12.asp

(short version of above):
To activate ICF:

1.. Click Start, and then click My Network Places.
2.. Under Network Tasks, click View Network Connections. (Alternatively,
you can right-click My Network Places and then click Properties.)
3.. Right-click the connection used for the Internet, and then click
Properties.
4.. Click the Advanced tab, and select the Protect my computer and network
check box to turn on ICF. (This also makes the Settings button active,
allowing you to configure advanced parameters.)
Plug the cable back in. This will protect you long enough to get the patch
for the RPC vulnerability.

5. go to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

and download the patch.

You should use a firewall if you are connected directly to the Internet at
all times to help protect against these things.

Dear Barb,

Thanks for the nice article.
I use my pc for voice chat on yahoo.. can u suggest me a method of using
this service even after enabling ICF?

Regards

I don't know what ports Yahoo chat uses. Those ports are probably posted on
the Yahoo web site.

Yahoo! Messenger typically listens for peer-to-peer
requests on port 5101/TCP and client-to-server
communications on 5050/TCP, but is not limited to
these ports.
The Yahoo! Messenger client will attempt to connect to the
server through ports 20, 21, 25, 37, 80, and 119 if 5050
is blocked.
