Hercules AIW 9000 Pro 64 - Monitor resolution and software resolution don't match

My computer was working fine and dandy the other day, but, me being a
man, I decided to do some tweaking, which turned out not to be so
successful. I changed something in my motherboard setting and now when
I start my computer the said resolution of the software and the
monitor's don't match.

For instance, if I choose a resolution of 800x600 in the software
(either WinXP Pro or Mandrake 9.2 in X or out) then the monitor's
resolution goes one step above to 1024x768. Most of the time the image
is completely displayed (after some further tweaking), but there's
always that feeling that there's something wrong lingering in the air.

I know the monitor's set resolution by clicking on its menu button and
going to display timing and I've tried to fish around for a override
resolution button, but no luck.

Of course, I went back to the motherboard settings and set everything
back where it was, but no go, the problem persists.

Any ideas?

There is no setting in bios of motherboard that can or may result in such
behavior of monitor. I think it's a driver related issue, maybe even
corrupted files?

How about dos screens? What is the res shown by monitor (in monitor menu)
They are supposed to be in 600x400 (i think), what does your monitor shows
during bootup phase and inside windows ?

(if your monitor has menu, it should display current res. and refresh rate.
Most modern monitors do)

That's a good suggestion. How do I check if the files are corrupted?
I'm assuming that I probably need to re-install the drivers..?
1 - I just thought of this: I'm using the Omega ATI driver under
Windows. Could that have something to do with it? Well, I'll try to
revert back to the stock driver tonight and see what happens.

Yep, the DOS screens are weird, too. It varies from 800x600 to
1024x768 (resolution shown in the monitor menu).
2 - Could it be that the BIOS from one of the two cards (motherboard
or video) is causing this? Should I try to update/re-install the BIOS?

Indeed, that's how I found out that the monitor and software
resolutions weren't matching.

Looks bad. Try to disable a setting called "shadow video bios" and every
thing that says shadow, disable it in bios. Maybe that help. Other than
that, i think it's either your monitor who's wrong, or most likely problem
with videocard-bios. See if there are any bios updates on herc. site,
altough not very likely.

No shadow video bios enabled and it still looks weird at boot up. I
had posted this before under the impression that I had the problem
overall, but the resolution works fine under Windows, but not at
boot-up nor under Mandrake 9.2.

In my quest to get back into Linux, I tried installing Fedora
yesterday (since I still haven't been able to configure my video card
under Mandrake and I have the hopeless idea that it might work fine
under Fedora) and it seems that Fedora is able to properly configure
the screen resolution. Anyway, I'm going to try to play around a bit
more and see if I can get a different monitor to see if there's
something to do with the monitor.

Honestly i think it's your monitor's fault. It's DDC info gets wierd under
any other os than windows..

Asestar, thanks for all the help so far. I have more oddities now - I
installed Fedora and the resolution now works fine. Except (of course,
there's always an except) that the colors now are washed out. There
are a few threads out there that list the same problem, but I still
haven't been able to read through them all and try some stuff out
later on. I'll keep you updated.

In any case, the problem persists - on bootup the monitor's resolution
is not correct. Do you think that it would help if I was to completely
reset the system? Is there a system battery for the video board that I
should reset (I don't think so, but I thought I ask)?
