My computer is now 8 years old and the last thing I downloaded on it was SP3
pack. This morning I turned on the PC as per usual and was greeted with a
message from Microsoft saying I need to activate/validate my windows xp. I
found 2 product key numbers on the cover of the original discs (which I
think had been installed by Dell when I bought the PC) but both of these were
rejected and now I don't know what to do and I also am confused as to why
after all these years, I have received this message :-((((

I can't understand why after 8 years this message has popped up ~ there is
also a little snowflake looking icon in the bottom left hand corner of the
toolbar together with an intermittant notice saying I have 9 days left to
activate windows :S

If anyone can help me with this problem (I really hope so) could you put it
in a language that a techno phobic old(ish) lady like me can understand. I
do know that I am using Windows XP (home) edition and if there is any other
information required on this matter, please do not hesitate to email me.

Many thanks in advance for any help/advice you can give.

Kind regards xxx

There is the possibility the Windows Key code for your PC is an
OEM key code and not the same as the codes you have already
tried. Use one of the four utilities listed below to indentify the
actual key code.

That snowflake icon does not look normal so I would not use
it to activate, instead call and activate by phone.

Here are four utilities, all of which will display your product keys:
Belarc Advisor: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
(It does a good job of providing a wealth of information.)
Also:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml
and: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html
and RockXP: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4138.html which has additional
features

Note: Also check the side of your PC case or bottom of the laptop for the
OEM key code. If there is a sticker with the code it will most likely not
match what is displayed by the utilities mentioned above as OEMs such as
Dell use an internal key code when they build your PC.

The key code on the sticker is for use with your Windows CD
(that hopefully came with your PC)
if you ever need to reinstall Windows.
