Have an older HP 612 C desk jet printer & just spent aprox.$70.00 for a
colored & blk/white cartridges & NO color comes out!,PLUS a solid
black, damp, inky page, only, with the exception that once it was small
WHITE text on solid black damp paper!

I am elderly, don't drive & am so disappointed after being what I THOUGHT
fortunate to get to a computer store & buy them only to NOT be able to
get ANY satisfactory printouts!

It is definetely NOT the fault of the ink cartridges,as that I DID find
out,so if anyone can advise me in not too complicated instuctions,as I
am NOT savy about tech.items & HTML impaired, even!
I would be thrilled!

Can get NO satisfaction on line, from the company as they no longer even
LIST a 612 C ! Oh dear... :((

TIA

We assume you installed (from CD) the right printer
driver (software) for your operating system. If so,
telephone today the store that sold you the
printer and inks. Output paper should not be
wet, whatever is printed or not printed.

Hello Nan
It sounds like the printer is printing a solid black page for some reason and
with this series of printers a solid black high density print will be wet for a
few minutes after printing.
This model has a built in test page. Try this, power the printer on, press the
resume button (not the power button) for more than 5 seconds then release it.
The printer should print a test page.
If it does so successfully then the chances are that you have a problem with
the computer settings.
If the test page does not print good black and colour images then there is a
problem with the printer, so please let us know what is on the test page.
Tony

If it does so successfully then the chances are that you have a problem
with
the computer settings.

Just to add, that I suspect a "negative" printing (black as white, and white
as black). If it prints the test page correct, I suggest to print a page
with bold large sized text characters.

Thank you SO MUCH!,...each of you! I neglected to mention I have no
computer, but just a web TV. Am sorry I forgot to say that, before. Is
VERY nice of you all to try to help me so quickly! I don't understand
still, but perhaps eventually,...hopefully! You probably all have regular
computers. I will keep checking here!

Appreciatively,
Nan

Nan
You can still do the test from the printer.
Just press the resume button for more than 5 seconds and see what sort of test
page you get. A computer is not necessary for this test and it will help to
narrow down the cause.
Good luck

As Tony mentioned, the first thing to do would be to print a test page.
This is easy, and does not need the Web TV. Turn on the printer, then
just press and hold the formfeed button until a page prints. See
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bpd07098&dlc=en&lang=en#N705
(the DeskJet 612 is the same as the 610 for these tests).

Please print this test page and let us know the results. Based on the
test results we can make recommendations on what to try next.

Bob Headrick

Thank you also,Bob! I accessed that URL,and to my GREAT surprise!,AND
with a smile,STILL,on my face :))) as is more than I hoped for,a PERFECT
test page evolved,in COLOR!!!! I am yet pretty technically impaired, but
this does seem encouraging???!

Keeping my fingers crossed and praying!

How does one change this text to a "bolder"text? I THINK(???) I opted
for the biggest text available in the beginning, years ago,IF that is
what you are attempting to help me understand.

I may not be on the wave length I am supposed to be! I really have a
difficult time with instructions.I may even have,at least,a bit of ADD.I
hope not,but I don't concentrate well.

So pleased for your & everyones attempt to help me!! Thank's!

regard to printers.

Nan
What you have done is prove that the printer is probably working correctly.
This was an important first step.
Now you need someone with Web TV experience, unfortunately I have none.
Bob do you, or any other poster, have any knowledge of WebTV or do you know
where Nan could get some further help?
Tony

Felt encouraged or DID!,at least,(ha!) untill I tried to understand
certain info on the HP page,or site! Quote HP:"Make sure U R using an
IEEE-1284 compliant parallel, printer cable,& all I know about that is it
must be there as never USED to have ANY trouble, printing in the far
away, past,UNLESS because I have the HP 612 C desk jet something MORE is
now needed that was NOT in the past, but that hardly makes sense,to me.
^oO^ ???

The instructions "HP" gave about cleaning the cartridges made me throw
up my... hands and almost hyper ventilate! That was SCARY!!!! I have COPD
as it IS!! :-/ ^@@^!!!!!!!! I would never attempt that!!!, but not
driving I can't take the printer in & even if I could it might be
cheaper to buy a new one, although I WAS told at "Best Buys,or Office
Max"?? that there IS no longer a printer offered in stores that is now
compatable for WEB TV!! :( THAT was NOT a good day! :((

Well it's late & I must stop for now.Just want you ALL to know how good
hearted you all are for taking so much time & effort,to help me! Thank
you ALL VERY MUCH!!!! I realize there is just so much you CAN do & the
rest is up to me,but it all helps me to think there IS hope! :)))

The good news is that your printer is working correctly, which means the
problem is in the cable or Web TV side of things. Cables rarely go bad,
but it is probably worth trying to unplug and then plug the cable back
in on each end just to make sure it is seated properly. If that does
not help the issue probably lies with the Web TV drivers.

Have you made any changes to your Web TV system since the printer
worked? For example, are there software updates? I am completely
ignorant of Web TV. Do you have the original model or the rev 2 model?
Since you have the rather old DeskJet 612 I suspect it is the original
model. The Web TV web site says: "For support for previous models of
MSN TV: Call 1-800-469-3288 or e-mail us at (e-mail address removed)".
You might also try posting in the HP forum at
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/categoryhome.do?categoryId=415.
There is not much (any?) Web TV discussion there but someone there may
know what to try.

More help!!,...thank you!! I even had an email from one of your very
nice, caring lurkers! How about THAT?! :))) I will access those new URL's
you posted just now and do you think perhaps I am missing a UBS cable or
whatever it's called?

Just got a phone call that I am needed so will not get a chance to be on
line for??? but am sure checking each day, untill this gets going
correctly, and I surely will let you all know what's transpired!

Happy New Year to each of you!!! & thank you ALL once again!

Please see Bob Headricks latest advice, also try posting a question in
alt.online-service.webtv there are some printer related posts there. Be sure to
explain that the printer internal test is good, hopefully someone will be able
to help you.

You do not need a USB cable as your printer was before the days of USB.
Your printer uses a parallel cable. Since the printer used to work fine
your cables are probably fine. You do not need an IEEE-1284 cable for
this printer either - this printer works fine with a standard parallel
cable, the IEEE standard came along later.

I would try unplugging and replugging both ends of the printer cable to
the computer. Also, are there any printer settings in the Web TV?

Regards,
Bob Headrick

Thanx Bob! I unplugged & plugged back in except for the LARGEST
one, which won't BUDGE! I tried & pried, but it is in there, SO tight it
won't come out!

I also accessed that page or site with the URL you posted and am VERY
thankful to see the phone # you also sent!

I am a bit overwhelmed this week, due to other things as well, but IF &
when I get it to work I CERTAINLY will let ALL of you KNOW,because you
ALL have gone over board & BEYOND the call of duty in sincerely wanting
to help,AND you HAVE!,in telling me things to try that I did not know to
try before!!!!

P.S. I do NOT see even ONE "setting" on my printer btw. Front has ONLY
the 2 yellow lights;one for power & the other for error & nothing else
on either side.

Happy New Year to you,Tony,Yanni, your lurker & whomever else was kind
enough to take the time to help a complete stranger! SO hope I didn't
leave anyone OUT! If so it was certainly NOT intentional!

Gratefully!!!!,
Nan ^<>-<>^ :)

I was SO afraid in thanking you all I might accidently not get EACH one
thanked & would feel terrible if that was the case! & I MEANT to include
YOU,also,Don!!!,when thanking the others!

However;I don't require software,unlike the regular computers.WebTV has
no software of any type that I'm aware of,as nowhere to install it,but
WebTV gives me everything I,personally, need, for my enjoyment,as I can
surf the whole net,do email,as well as be a member of NG's (News Groups)
of my choice, which I was told expensive computers don't access!,...
(NG'S I mean)but evidently that's not so, or accurate info!,as here you
all ARE!!! & goodie! goodie!,...for THAT! ;)))

Sincerely,
With MUCH thank's,Don!,
