Any reason you cannot use Remote Assistance?

You can use a third party product - of course. I recommend UltraVNC or
TightVNC.
(Google for them.)

If your both behind a firewall/router you need to enable UPnP on the
firewall/router and you may need to open TCP Port 3389...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301529/en-us

Using Messenger is probably the best way to use RA in your case. See the
links Shenan pointed you too earlier...

Beyond that since your dad is running MCE you could use Remote Desktop to
connect to his PC. See the page I pointed you too earlier for help with
that...

But Remote Desktop doesn't allow the other person to view what is happening
or have the communication abilities of Remote Assistance, does it?

ss.

That's correct...but it is another option if you need to access the machine
to fix something...

Hi,

From my experience, if UPnP is enabled on the router you don't have to
forward port 3389.
