Attached (sent) herewith is a screen capture picture of the error message.
A fix would be appreciated. It does not occur for all Web Sites and does
appear to do any harm.

I am running XPSp2 with all up-dates. Have scanned for viruses and adware
and have none.

Since when has Microsoft supported yEnc? Maybe you better check what is
that "helper application" you have installed which supposedly support
yEnc encoding but that obviously doesn't work.

No attachment...and not sure it would be safe to open anyway considering how
many times you posted!

I would like to know what the helper application is so that I can
re-install it. Obviously IE is not downloading it automatically.

The helper application has nothing to do with yEnc. I am using
Xnews as my news reader. Used a screen capture program to capture
the error message as a jpg file and posted the jpg file using yEnc
encoding with Xnews. After all - a picture is supposed to be worth a
thousand words.

I would also add that when I checked my posting only showed up
once although I posted the jpg file in segments. I attempted to
post it as a single file but got an eror message saying it was
too large. I suspect (know) that the segments I posted were probably
too small (could have made them larger and thus fewer postings) thus
generating the "many posts".

Please do not post binaries to this newsgroup about a programme to which
this newsgroup is not devoted. Simply transcribe the error message. Then,
please advise what programme is triggering the error message and what you
were doing at the time.

Actually the problem, so far reported, is that the helper application
already downloaded and installed is causing the error. Use BHO Demon or
Spybot's BHO utility to see which BHOs (browser helper objects) you have
installed for IE. BHO Demon will let you disable them without having to
uninstall them to see which one(s) causes the problem.
The helper application has nothing to do with yEnc.

I'm not sure how a BHO for IE has to do with you using Xnews. Or is
this error separate of Xnews and simply when you are browsing whatever
sites have yEnc encoded files for download? Microsoft doesn't support
anything yEnc so you must've added a BHO, the yEnc proxy, or something
related to yEnc that is interferring with your file downloads.

Consider it a fluke that YOUR news server actually lets you included
attachments to your posts submitted to a NON-binary newsgroup. In the
past, when I have submitted a post with an attachment to a non-binary
newsgroup, the NNTP server accepted my post but vaporized it (i.e., it
never showed up). In your case, your post was still accepted as it got
propagated to other NNTP server but your attachment got stripped. So I
see no attachments to your posts. You'll need to post to a binary group
(even alt.test should work) with your attached file and provide a
link to that post here so we can see what you attached.

Someone using Google Groups or another webnews-for-dummies interface to
Usenet won't see your attachment(s), either. Those access methods
deliberately strip off attachments.

Well here it is (ugh). I go to certain web sites one being
Fraserdowns.com. The page loads and the following message comes up.

Application not Found

dtdp://748|331|1|jgen44.cjtl.net/HTM/704/0/JavaSiteRequest.asp?LV=6000&NF=
453&NF=0&1W=720&IH=3008ORD=1108836404078?&

I then click on the OK button and a new message pops up saying

Internest Explorer cannot open this helper application for

dtdp://748|331|1|jgen44.cjtl.net/HTM/704/0/JavaSiteRequest.asp?LV=6000&NF=
453&NF=0&1W=720&IH=3008ORD=1108836404078?&

The protocol specified in the address is not vaild. Make sure the address
is correct and try again.

I click OK and all seems to be well.

If I go thereafter to other sites and revist Fraserdowns.com I do not then
get the messages but if I shut down IE, reopen it and go to Fraserdowns.com
the messages pop up again.

The binary I attempted to post would have made everything much clearer.

I would add that have have scanned for viruses using AVG and McAfee and
have scanned for adware using Ad-Aware and Spybot and all appears to be
well. I at one time did have a virus for 1 day but McAfee cleaned it up.

There is no such thing as a standard URL scheme
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Url#URL_Scheme) whose prefix is "dtdp://";
see ftp://ftp.rfc-editor.org/in-notes/rfc1738.txt for a list of URL
schemes. Maybe that site wants desparately to download a program to
your computer to install it which will then provide a protocol handler
for the dtdp protocol. Could be they also download a cookie, maybe a
per-session cookie that expires when IE gets closed, that lets them know
what actions have already been attempted (and failed) when you visited
their site. You'll need to contact the web author to ask what the hell
is the dtdp protocol or why they screwed up their links. So, basically,
you don't have THEIR software installed to handle THEIR oddball URL
scheme. That's probably a good thing.

I posted the orignial request for a fix of the problem and since the
request I have discovered the fix for me while surfing the newsgroups.

It appears the problem may have been caused by my adware scanning using
Spybot, Ad Aware and Mircrosoft's own beta antispyware which may have
crippled the adware/malware but did not delete it.

I ran HijackThis and while examining the log notice an entry ending in

localsplnet.dll

which was located in the C:\windows\system32 folder.

A google search indicated that the dll file is a helper but malware file
used to generate pop-up advertising. I used the Hijackthis software fix-
it option to remove the dll. I ran regedit and did a Find for localsplnet
and discovered an entry in the Registry. I then ran Registry Mechanic and
because I deleted the dll file the entry showed up as an error which I
fixed using Registry Mechanic.

For the past couple of days I have had no problems.

It appears that most of the anti adware programs do not deal with the dll
in question in normal mode. I cannot say what would have happened in safe
mode.
