I am trying to take a Word document and make a power point
presentation. I go to file, open, type of file, all
outlines, and then chose my file. This makes 179 slides. A
slide for each line of text. What am I doing wrong?

Kim you are not doing anything wrong. PowerPoint shall create a slide every
it see a paragraph. Therefore, I know that you pressed enter 179 times in
your Word document. you should only press enter in Word when there is a
needed change of paragraph, in other words type without hitting enter.
All paragraphs will wind up in the title position. to make bullets in
PowerPoint from Word each word in Word must be preceded by a TAB character.

Hope this helps

Don't open text files from power point! That's your
problem. I siggest to copy and paste the text on the new
power point file after creating the edited text area.

No, PPT can open outlines, and it actually does a pretty good job of it
if the text outline is set up well before.

Thanks Echo, I think I was using PPT 4 version explanation. Learn something
every day.

Spend a little time applying styles to your Word document, Kim.

Word --> PPT
Heading 1-->Slide title
Heading 2-->Primary bullet
Heading 3-->Secondary bullet

Etc.

Then use File/Send to PPT.
