Rog

While checking a few things for the previous post I tried to go into Tools
in IE6 and am getting:-

"The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I am an administrator!!!

I run Antivirus software (as you will see from the footer), a Firewall as
well as Spybot and WinPatrol so I think (hope???) its not an infection.

Can anyone suggest anything please?

Cheers.
Roger.

Looking further it seems that it is only going through Tools - option that
produces this.
Going through Properties on the Desktop icon allows me in but I notice that
the option to change my home page is greyed out - though the home page has
not been hijacked!

Have run all my Spybot stuff and BHO demon but have found nothing. I suspect
something has failed in an attempt to change the page but has left some sort
of policy or something that has removed right but I am at a loss on how to
troubleshoot this.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Cheers.
Roger.

Hi Rog,

Remove IE Restrictions & Restore Missing tabs. Download a fix from:
http://www.angelfire.com/dragon/sramesh2k/reg/IE_reset_restrictions.reg

Also, refer Fix 268 from Kelly's site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Restore All tabs in IE and Removes the ** Internet Options ** Restrictions
as well

The problem may be due to:

1. A spyware. Download Ad-Aware from www.lavasoftusa.com, scan the system
and eliminate the malware products. Re-apply the above fix if necessary.
** Remember to update the pattern file using WebUpdate in Ad-Aware **

( Caused by a malware called CoolWebSearch. Also, Download:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/cwshredder.zip )

2. You have enabled SpyBot immunize (protection) feature or any other
similar software.

It was me - I had been fiddling with Spybot and Locked some IE settings!!

Thanks.
Roger.

Hi Roger, Try disabling the Immunize feature in Spybot.

Roger.

It was a combination of both "Lock IE start page against user changes" and
"Lock IE control panel against opening from within IE".
Its ok now.
Thanks for the help.
Roger.
