Dave

Hi Guys,
small problem.
I am running XP Pro which has developed a problem and I could not boot.
Anyway I reinstalled onto a spare partition and now have 2 windows installed
(1 OK, 1 corrupt). I had a password on my user account on the old
installation. Now I can see the account through windows\documents and
settings etc. but access is denied because I have created a new OS and user.
I know the password to get in but I don`t know how to find the option. I
cannot boot the OS which is corrupt and last known good, safe mode etc were
no use either. I have files I desperately need but they are locked away.

Any suggestions

Thanks in advance.

Dave

Hi Dave,

You will not be able to load the old profile, but as long as the files were
not encrypted you can access them by taking ownership. Right-click the
folder in question, choose properties. Go to the security tab and click
advanced. You can use the owner tab to take over this folder and its
contents. Details can be found here:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421]

You may need to disable simple file sharing in the control panel/folder
options/view tab to do this.
