Clear out your tmp files.
In Internet explorer click on "Tools", "Internet
Options", Then in the Temporary Internet Files section
click on "Delete Files", Ok to delete all off line files
In Internet explorer click on "Tools", "Internet

I was having a similar problem; I was trying to save jpgs and gifs. I wrote to my niece who works for Microsoft and she sent me the below links which took me right to a solution. Below is her answer to MY problem ( and the links--you may have to copy and paste them into your browser if they aren't "clickable", but the first one is the one which worked for me. It's been awhile but I believe I had to clear out temp internet files and cookies. It makes NO sense to me but Microsoft had the answer and it worked! Good luck, Pam

So, there is a simple workaround that will tell Windows to treat it as the file type that you want, but secretly it isn’t really saving it right. This means that it will act and seem and be a JPEG, but the file size would be unnecessarily large.
To do this workaround just name your images including a file name in the Save As dialog box. So instead of just typing in Andrew you would type Andrew.jpg. So even though the drop-down will still say it is a BMP Windows will believe it is a JPEG.
Windows is stupid in this way. If you take any file in your system and change the file extension Windows will just believe that it is that file type (in most cases this would render the file unusable but in the case of different image formats it works ok). I’m not sure if this will wok with animated GIFs since they are a special multi-frame image type.
