Sandy

I have this problem that started in the last month or
so. It's with 2 of the games I play, one of them is DAOC
and the other is Sims2. With DOAC I can just click on
the button at the bottom of the screen and start over but
with Sims2, I have to completely restart my computer.

The problem is this: every hour on the hour when I am
playing, the computer will kick me back to the desktop.
I have looked at the event logs, I have shut down
everything I can.....WHAT ELSE IS THERE that would be
doing this. This only started in the last 30ish days.

Hi Sandy,

Sounds like a program is pulling focus away from the game.
This program might be spyware reporting to it's server.

Let's try some basic troubleshooting. If the problem still persists
please post back and we'll try some more steps. Good luck! :-)

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Some games
require a patch: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

5. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html

Hi Jimmy,
Well I did everything you said and found one virus and
got rid of it (worm) and then I went through everything
else and got rid of stuff I didn't need, and for about 2
hours I sat and worked on everything, but like clockwork,
it did it again twice more. I am so fed up. It only
started about in the last 30 days or I would of been
flipping mad by now with everything. I have played DAOC
for over 2 years and have never been dumped to the
desktop other than when the cable went out once. I have
a powerful machine since I am a game player.

Any other suggestions....btw, I do work on computers
daily, but this one has me stumped. I cannot figure it
out at all.

Not to jump in here ahead of Jimmy, who I'm sure will have more suggestions,
but it sounds like you haven't really cleared out the problem. I'd suggest
running all your anti-virus checks, Trojan-detectors, etc., in Safe Mode.
Check the information here, too, for additional ideas:

Okay Jimmy and Chris I have done all of that, thought I
had it licked but it continues on, once an hour, I am
ready to reload my machine but I have so much on
it...yeah I know I should back it up anyhow. I know
better :-)

The last adware program is great, I liked it better than
the spyware program. Got rid of more stuff...it's
amazing what you pick up. I am very careful about what I
look at and what I download....but this is really
stumping me.

Now what?

Did you perform the functions on aumha.org in Safe Mode? Some of these
critters hide themselves as running applications during regular operations,
and can only be removed if you're in Safe Mode with basically nothing
launched, including drivers.

Yes I did, I did it this morning. I ran the virus checker, the adware
checker, spyware checker, something just wants to do something every hour and
today.... I am really frustrated about it. I guess I am going to back up my
system and start over...UGH... I hate doing that. But I think it is
something I did in the last few weeks, something I picked up ..... I tried to
remember what or where I have been ... but to no avail. I am very careful
about downloading anything these days (as I was a victim of theft identity in
the last six months).

Well I need to get busy.....ugh ugh ugh.

Hi Sandy,

Check your scheduled tasks to see if there's anything listed
there, and also try to think of what software you might have
installed around the same time that problem began to surface.
