2. Can you also help me out on this one too. I am trying
to create a new logical drive consisting of half your
existing free space. It tells me to Right-click free
space but It won't let me, can you tell me what I am
doing wrong PLEASE!! Then it say click New logical
Drive, and click next to launch the New Partitioned
Wizard, but I havent' made it that far. Thank YOu for
you time. Email me at (e-mail address removed)

Hmmm you are saying "it told me to ..." or "it tells me...". Whom, or what,
is this mysterious "It" ?

There is no security tab - well there isn't on mine anyway. (the security
tab would only come into play when using shared folders) What exactly are
you trying to achieve?

As to your second question, you can only create a primary or logical drive
in 'free space'. My guess is that the whole of your hard drive is taken up
as one partition. For example if you have a 40gb drive the partition created
when xp was installed was 40gb. (I assume your pc came preintalled with xp?)
This is the reason for the option being greyed out. You are doing nothing
wrong, you simple cannot complete the task the way your hard drive is
partitioned. You can alter this by reducing the size of your primary (xp)
partition, but this would require third party software such as Partition
Magic.
I have very admoration for the teaching profession but it is a pity they
didn't check that students computers can complete the tasks they are asking
before issuing such projects.

The Security tab appears when "Simple File Sharing" is turned off. (In Pro,
anyway)

On the first problem from http://is-it-true.org/nt/xp/atips/atips17.shtml

Security tab missing in XP

If your XP workstation is standalone or part of a workgroup, the security
tab will be hidden. To have it show,
a.. Open Windows Explorer
b.. Choose Folder Options from the Tools menu
c.. On the View tab, scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings
d.. Clear the check box next to "Use Simple File Sharing."
e.. Click OK to apply the change
On the second problem. I think you're confusing "free" space with empty
space.

In order to create a new partition with the tools included with Windows you
need "free" space, which would be drive space not previously allotted to a
partition. It would be an unusual circumstance for you to have free space
unless you took particular steps to achieve it while initially formatting
and installing Windows. Attempts to alter current partitions with the use of
Windows resident tools results in loss of any data on the partition in
question.

You can manipulate existing partitions with third party tools like partition
Magic.

There are several answers, depending on your Set-up. If you are using XP
Home, then you never will see a Security tab, unless you restart using Safe
Mode. If you are using XP Pro, and did Not log onto an account in the
Administrators group, then you will have to log off and log onto an account
in the Administrators group (impossible in a typical school lab setup),
where you can clear the box labeled "Use Simple File Sharing". If you did
Not log onto an account in the Administrators group, then changing the check
box has no effect (it will return to the value set by the Administrator).
The only solution is to log on as an Administrator.

Right-clicking on "Free Space" in the drive's properties dialog box has no
effect since it is only text/graphics, besides the fact that the drive's
properties dialog box is not the right place to create a partition or
logical drive. Nor can a logical drive be created from what Windows calls
"Free Space", because what Windows calls "Free Space" is unused space in a
logical drive that is Already created and formatted. Nor can you create a
new logical drive, if you did Not log onto an account in the Administrators
group.

First, you have to log onto an Administrator's account (impossible in a
typical school lab setup), right-click My Computer, select Manage, click
Disk Management (or click Computer Management from Administrative Tools in
Control Panel), and right-click a part of the partition that is Not
allocated to any logical drive (or right-click a part of the disk that is
Not allocated to any partition). You will Not be able to do this, if you
are Not logged onto an Administrator's account.

Looks like you were given an assignment you cannot possibly complete, unless
you are the PC Administrator.

Do you have XP Pro or Home Edition? If you have Home Edition, it can only
be turned off in Safe Mode and then it is only turned off for that session,
once you boot back to Windows you no longer have the option and it won't
appear. If you have Pro, are you looking in the right place. If you turn
off Simple File Sharing in Pro, right click a file or folder, select
properties, you should see a Security tab.

I have Pro, Simple File Sharing is unchecked in Folder
Options, when I right-click a folder I have no Security
tab . . . but my file system is FAT32 . . .

You only have the security options if your using NTFS as opposed to FAT32.
