Mandy

Ok, lets see if I can explain this. I have a computer that
is only a year old, and it runs XP. It crashed for no
reason about 6 months ago. I got it back up and running by
just reinstalling the components. Well, every since then I
have had problems with internet explorer telling me it had
encounter problems. I finally decided to go under my
daughters name, and the first time it worked, but then the
second time I got a box that said...some of the windows
components are not working properly and told me to insert
the windows XP disc. I did that and it all installed.
Apparently it messed up the system, cause now this is what
happens when i turn the comp on. I get a blue screen that
says............

A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WIDOWS HAS SHUT DOWN TO
PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

I proceed to go to F8 to try and start in safe mode like it
tells me too, but it just takes me back to the blue screen.
It lists things to do, but it won't let me go newhere!!
PLEASE HELP ME!!

Hi, Mandy.

Rather than trying to track down what caused all the problems that have
manifested themselves in the past 6 months and fix them, you might be better
off to do an in-place upgrade, as described in this KB article:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

This will reinstall WinXP while preserving your installed applications and
data - and some of your tweaks. As the article says, it is not intended as
a timesaver; it will take about as long as a fresh install. And you will
need to visit Windows Update as soon as you get your firewall and antivirus
back in place and get back online. You will need to download SP1 (if it is
not included on your WinXP CD-ROM) and all the later fixes, including the
July one that protects you from the Blaster worm. Better plan on half a day
for the whole project; maybe more if you don't have broadband to speed up
the downloads.

Many people misread the KB article and select the first Repair option; be
sure to select Install first, and then to Repair the existing installation
on the later screen. In Method 2, press Enter at paragraph 2 and get to
paragraph 4 before pressing R.

Have you tried to delete your partition and creating a
new one? This could be your problem. This will result in
formating the whole hard drive and reinstalling xp again.
You are going to need your xp cd to do this. Other wise
you just might have a corrupted backup there creating
registry errors with certain programs.

That sounds great, but the problem is, I can't get to a
screen that would allow me to do that. I've tried all the
options on the page including trying to start in safe mode,
and it won't allow me to do anything, it just keeps looping
me back to that same page. Thanks for the reply!

Hi, Mandy.

Method 1 in KB article 315341 is to reinstall from within WinXP. Since you
can't boot into WinXP, you can't use that method.

Method 2 is to put your WinXP CD-ROM into the CD drive, then set your
computer to boot from the CD. This method does not even try to boot WinXP
from your hard drive.

Be sure to read the whole article before you begin so that you will know
what to expect at each step.

You DID get a WinXP CD-ROM with your computer, didn't you? Some OEMs
deliver only a Recovery disk. Tell us the make and model of your computer
and somebody here will likely recognize it and know how to proceed in that
case.
