You fell victim to the W32.Randex.E virus. It´s a Trojan´s horse and a worm.
You can get rid of this malicious code by using the removal tool from:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.randex.e.html
Be advised never to surf the Internet without an up-to-date virusscanner and
firewall.
I can't get any sound from my speakers or cd's etc and am
wondering if this is why, if so can I reinstall this
feature.
While re-installing XP you have removed the soundcard drivers. When you do
have a CD that came with your pc or soundcard, you can re-install the driver
from that CD. If not, download the latest driver for your soundcard from the
manufactorer´s site.
Therefore you must know the type of soundcard you use. You will find this
information the following way:
- Click Start > Settings >Control Panel
- open System and click the Hardware tab
- Click devices (the 2nd button; I don´t exactly know the proper English
names, because I use a Dutch version of Win XP)
- You´ll see the soundcard listed with all other devices.
- Click the "+" sign next to the soundcard.
Now you will see brand and type of your soundcard.
Search with Google on: <type of soundcard> +driver
You will find the manufacturers site and can download the driver there.
Save it to disc, or better: to CD-R for future use.
Go back to the device screen (see above), click right on the soundcard and
select Properties.
- select the driver tab
- click "updating driver"
an installation dialog starts.
When prompted, point to the location where you saved the driver.
After having installed the driver, reboot.
I am fairly dumb about this stuff.
Don´t worry, that is what Usenet is for. You can help yourself by visiting
sites about Windows Xp, or buying a good book.
Best regards,
