Usually, my computer is slow, but I guess that it's just because the hard
drive is compressed. But now, my computer is going bonkers. Sometimes, when I
open my computer and log-in to the Administration account, after a few
minutes the computer sort of crashes- programs can't be opened from the
taskbar, programs won't open from the desktop, task manager doesn't show up
when I press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and even my start menu won't open! I then have
to close the computer by pressing the red button on the powerbar. Today,
after I went out and made my computer stand by for about 5 hours, it took a
few seconds longer than it used to to wake from standing-by, and when the
screen was black, the desktop slowly comes down from the top. I'm afraid that
one day my computer will be completely unusable. What can I do? Is this
because of malware?

I use Windows XP SP2, and my computer has been around for about 5 years or
so. For the past two years or so, my computer has been lagging a lot. I think
it's because that there isn't much room in the hard drive, and there's only
one hard drive in the CPU. One last thing - I was using Uniblue Registry
Cleaner Trial - and it said that my computer had about 1000 Registry Errors -
but the trial edition only cleaned 15 errors.

Uniblue Registry Cleaner could well make your problems worse. Registry
Cleaners are not the answer.

Try another approach and discover why it is slow.

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

What is the CPU speed?

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more
informative.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Are there any problems indicated in the System and Application logs?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Your problems are due to using Uniblue registry cleaner. Contact the authors
of the program and ask how you should resolve your issue.

If you do get a resolution from them, and your system returns to its normal
slow self, remember NOT to use Uniblue Registry Cleaner ever again.

If you do not get a resolution from them, you are looking at doing a repair
install (you will need an XP installation CD.. note that a recovery CD will
not work), or you will need to re-install your entire system..

Your problems will be compounded by the fact that you are running a
compressed drive. If you have to re-install, do yourself a favour and get a
larger drive.

Compressing drives is as bad as using Uniblue Registry Cleaner..

The Commit Charge's Total is 469152 (It's is ever changing, however) The
limit is 639944, and the peak is 523876.

The CPU speed is 1799 Mhz.

How do you post a copy of a file onto Microsoft Discussion Groups?

I have used Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter before, but they never have
made my computer faster, and I'm afraid that I I use them something horrible
will happen.

Again, I'm not sure how to post files onto these discussion groups.

Also, something I forgot to mention was that I used Uniblue RegistryBooster
(the official name) and CCleaner registry cleaner a while back, like months
ago, before these errors started occuring in September-October this year. I'm
pretty sure I created restore points beforehand, but unfortunately I
uninstalled Uniblue RegistryBooster after the cleaning of only 15 errors and
conflicts. Also, another error has started occuring. When I try to open a
program from the TaskBar, it flashes orange and it won't open. Sometimes, if
I click a program on the taskbar, it will flash orange briefly and then open.
When two programs are on the screen, I have to minimize the smaller program
to see the larger one, such as Firefox browser which I am using to write
this. Also, I have to minimize a program just to see another, and click
within a program just to stop it's respective button to stop flashing. An
error that has started a while back, sometimes a program wouldn't appear on
the taskbar, even if it's open, but I solve that by opening the program
through Task Manager.

How much RAM memory do you have?

VolumeC.txt can be opened using Notepad. Highlight the required text in
the open file right click and select Copy. Paste the text into your
message.

Event Viewer Reports. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Click the button (this copies the Report to your
Clopboard) and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do
a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

" I have used Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter before, but they never
have made my computer faster, and I'm afraid that I I use them something
horrible will happen". Both make a difference when done in combination.
However, good system performance depends on a number of factors and one
or more of these other factors may have been working against better
performance when you ran Disk CleanUp and Disk Defragmenter. I have
never heard of something horrible happening through using these
particular tools.

Well, I've contacted Uniblue, but they don't really give a solution.

Is there any way to repair a PC from the effects of registry cleaners that
is free, and doesn't require you to use system restore, or do a repair
install?

If I ever get my PC fixed, you bet that I'll never touch a single registry
cleaner, or touch any computer component ever, unless I gain enough knowledge
to deal with PCs.

As I said earlier......

Have you removed the Uniblue software?

I guess someone now needs to develop a registry cleaner cleaner. ;-)

:

What does "they don't really give a solution" really mean - was it something
worth trying?

Another utility would have no means of knowing what this Uniblue has done to
your registry - unless perhaps it could somehow access your system restore
points, but I think you said you don't have any of those anyway.

It looks like you're at the place Mike Hall mentioned earlier:

"If you do not get a resolution from them, you are looking at doing a repair

But first, you'd do well to follow through with Gerry's line of enquiry.
