My problem, all of a sudden my computer acts as if it had no keyboard
and no mouse attached to it, although it does, and although I have tried
others. It gets to the logon screen and sits waiting for me to logon.
But I can't as the keyboard is just dead, as is the mouse. I can't
figure out how to do anything with it as it doesn't accept input from
keyboard so I can't go into bios or any other task requiring a
keystroke. Before I taqke it somewhere to be looked at I thought I'd try
here. TIA for any suggestions. (AMD athalon 2800+, 1 gig sdram corsair,
EVGA geforce 6800, win xp pro.)

ps2 or usb

They are color coded. In their respective proper slots. These are both
ps2 or psp or whatever, not usb. Others I've tried were as well. Maybe I
need to get ahold of a usb mouse and key, see if that works.

I have had many issues in the past with the PS\2 ports or their
controller breaking - the board works, but the PS\2 ports dont. It
tends to affect Athlon board more than Intel in my experience. You can
try buying a USB card or using built-in USB ports and see if this
might work. If USB works, you are pretty much assured its a fault in
the PS\2 ports or controller - sad to say, the onboard USB ports often
fail shortly after the PS\2 ports. Usually followed by everything else.

Well, connecting both to usb ports fixed it. So I guess the ps/2 ports
went haywire. Both at once? Oh well, fixed for now, until the usb ports
go bad anyway. Thanks.

The PS\2 ports are subject to a lot of sideways force and repeated
plugging in over time (they require more force than USB ports and have
no leeway for sideways movements) can lead to their connections to the
board becoming loose or the solder breaking, but you cant see it. If
both went at the same time, you might be facing some progressive
chipset failure that might get worse over time, but I wish you luck
that everything is now fine.

If the USB ports also go, you could get a PCI USB card, but on a PC I
was asked to look at a few months back, it was just easier to buy a
new board, CPU and RAM for it in the end - everything went haywire.
