Dear windowers,

I need urgent help with my old Windows 2000 laptop.

During startup it endurend a big smack. Now during startup it can't find the
Operating System anymore. So I can't do anything with it anymore.

Does anyone what I can do about this? It is crucial that the data remain on
the hard disk drive. So I do not want to format or make a total system
restore.

I hope to hear from you ASAP.

The most obvious answer is to retrieve your important
files from your backup medium. If you do not believe
in backing up your important files regularly then things
get a little harder. Here are a few options:
- Boot the machine with a Bart PE boot CD, then copy
your files to a networked machine.
- Remove the disk and install it in a 2.5" external USB
case, then connect the case to some other PC and
save your files.
- Remove the disk and connect it to a desktop PC.
You will need a $10.00 converter to connect it to
a standard IDE ribbon cable.
As you see, having a good backup would make life
much, much easier.

By the way, a Subject line of "Help" is not very likely
to attract the best respondents. How about something
like "Can't find operating system"?
