I have a Toshiba Satelite A-55 series laptop that has windows xp. I had to reinstall Windows due to sluggish performance. When I re-installed it encountered a hiccup and now when I turn it on, it will ask for the password and state it has been accepted but it will not go any further than that. Windows will not start up. IT DOES NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!! I am trying to re-install Windows to correct the problem but it will not let me! Any help I can get to re-install and fix the problem would be greatly appreciated, before I have to pay some computer guy an arm and a leg !!!!!

When you say that it won't let you re-install windows, what do you mean? Does it give you an error message when you try to boot from the CD?

Nothing!!!!!!!!!

When the computer starts, it will ask for a password. I type in the correct password and it says the computer is starting up but thats all it will do. It freezes on that screen and does nothing.

reply to help

The computer won't read the recovery disk, it won't start windows, it won't get past the password screen.

Is this password screen actually part of windows?

It sounds more like a BIOS password which may have to be removed through a BIOS reset.

I agree with Ian with this, so you might need to go into the bios before the system starts up if you can and load setup defaults.

login to bios

thank you for your reply, and how do I get into the bios to do this, as I mentioned I can not get past the pasword screen, even after accepting the proper password. Thanks in advance.

no f1 or f12 options

I do not get the f1 or f12 options when powering the laptop, it just goes straight to the password.

Ah man!! this is getting worse and worse!! :(

No F1, F2 or DEL options to enter setup?
By the password screen, has Windows actually started?

Problem Solved!!!!!!!!!

I found somewhere on another website that you can hit the esc and power button at the same time, then type your password and enter BIOS. From there you can change the boot order and that let my computer read the recovery disk. WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!!!!!!!!! I'm actually send this message from the computer that was damaged. Thanks again for everyones help
