Assuming you have a desktop machine:
1. Purchase a usb controller card from either a brick-and-mortar store
or online store. These cards are not expensive.
2. When you get the card, open the box and read the installation
instructions. Then shut down your computer and unplug it.
3. Open the case and ground yourself by touching the metal of the power
supply.
4. Carefully insert the usb controller card into one of the PCI slots.
Screw it down securely but not so tight as to strip the screw.
5. Leave the side of your case off but plug in the computer and start
Windows. XP will see your new card and ask for the drivers. Put the cd
in that came with the controller card OR otherwise follow the
installation instructions that came with the card.
6. When you are sure that everything is working properly, shut down the
computer and carefully close the case again.
