I've started getting the following message
c:windows\system\cmd.com
the NTVDM has encountered an illegal instruction
cs:06cl IP: 607B op:63 63 65 73 73

as a result Spy Bouncer will not load and run

Any suggestions please?

The file "windows\system\cmd.com" is most likely a Malware. A Google search
confirms it as well:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=system\cmd.com+site:symantec.com

The legitimate files are the following:

1. cmd.exe
2. command.com
(Present in %Windir%\System32 )

Run these malware cleaners:

1. Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com

2. SpyBot S&D
http://www.safer-networking.org

3. CWShredder
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Update 1 & 2 before running a scan.

Clean-up Windows Startup:

Then, run a full system virus scan with fully updated definitions. Try Trend
Micro's Sysclean package (free), it's capable of eliminating keyloggers,
trojans etc.

Ramesh thanks for your reply. i have tried all the malware cleaners you
mention and removed 4 viruses with the sysclean package but i still get the
error message mentioned in my 1st post. When i try to launch spybouncer the
loading screen appears and freezes - if i check task manager it says that
spybouncer is running and then when i try to close it down i get the error
message and when i take the 'close' option spy bouncer loads ok???

Inspect the startup applications, to see if the cmd.com file (possibly a
Malware) loads at startup.

Regarding spybouncer, try contacting their support team. See this note as
well:

Moreover, SpyBouncer will remain on the Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware list as
long as this kind of advertising for your product exists.
