I have an Asus Hi-Grade laptop that I bought from ny brother who had lost
all the manuals etc.

I have had no problems with it for two years and then tonight it has
completely locked me out and I can't get in. It will not even power up. The
only thing that happens is that the LCD function display below the screen
comes on, but an new symbol has appeared and I do not know what it means.

It consists of a locked padlock symbol with the letters 'A' and 'F' at its
top right and left corners, a figure 1 at its bottom left and a downwards
pointing arrow at its bottom right.

Can anyone out there help me with advice or point me to a place where i can
get some.

Sorry, it is an F7400.

Neal,

If you take a look at page 27 of the manual you will see the A means Caps
Lock and F means embedded keypad Lock is enabled.

Do the A and F indicators toggle when you press caps lock / num lock (F on
some laptops)? If so the CPU and bios are probably going.

Do you have a Windows 98 boot floppy? You could try that and see if it comes
up...

To find it, you enter F7 in the search box, and set the pulldown
menu to "All". Then, when this page pops up:

http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/download2.aspx?item=F7&type=like&file_type=All

click the F74 link. I tried searching for F74 and it wouldn't take
it, so I tried F7 instead.

ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/nb/f7400/Guides/f7400-101.pdf

Pg.27 says the lock symbol has to do with scroll lock, numlock etc.

Pg.18 shows a reset button next to the headphone jack.
Try pressing that.

Paul
