I have a mate who has a Asus Geforce FX5600 and he is alittle unhappy how
badly Far Cry game seems to play getting some quite jerky scenerios, so i
said i would come on here and ask u guys for some advice :) If he was to
upgrade would he better going ATI or sticking with nvidia? also he doesn't
want to be spending like mega £££ on a card just something faster than his
current FX5600.

Help appreciated.

Far Cry uses DX9.0 pixel shaders for lights. It uses DX8.0 shaders for just
about everything else.

ATI cards piss all over nVidia cards when it comes to pixel shaders.

Far Cry is a pretty graphics intensive game, one of the most demanding, I
would have thought. I Video card alone will not make this game perform
well... you need a very good all round system.

Check out the last graph on this page:

Not sure how credible the source is, but there doesn't seem to be that many
comparisons of cards on Far Cry.
