I need a new printer. I get this way every time I have to buy a cartridge
for the clunker I have now. (I paid $20 for it at a yard sale 5 years ago,
it works but takes forever to print but I degress) .

What I want to know is are those all in one printer/scanner/ fax ones any
good? What questions should I ask the sales person?

I have windows 98 and only 128 mb ram (a 20 gig harddrive) ... what else
should I know about these things, or should I hunt around again and spend
$50 on another cartridge and curse the Lexmaark 1100 every time I use it?

You should re-ink your Lexmark.
Do not let the sales people fool you.
The printer makers make most of their money off ink cartridges.
They train the store employees refills are "unsafe".
The fact is that re-inking cannot void your warranty.
See
Annotated Title 15 Commerce and Trade Chapter 50 Consumer Product
Warranties 15 Section 2302 “ (c) No warrantor of a consumer product
may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the
consumer's using, in connection with such product, any article or
service (other than article or service provided without charge under
the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or
corporate name; except that the prohibition of this subsection be
waived by the commission if: 1) The warrantor satisfies the Commission
that the warranted product will function properly only if the article
or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted
product, and 2) the Commission finds that such a waiver is in the
public interest. ” Under no circumstances may any company or
associate, salesperson or service technician deny you service or
warranty work that would otherwise be covered under the warranty
program. ® NOTE: All brand names are used for descriptive purposes
only and are the property of their respective owners

Make sure the manufacturer sells certified compatible inks.
Do not use "all purpose ink refills" or "universal refills".
