Hello,

Suddenly my computer will not allow XP to start. The
initial intro screen will appear and run for 1-2 minutes
and kick me to the default start page with the opitions
of starting in "Safe", "Safe with Networking", "Safe Mode
with Command Prompt", etc. Regardless of which option I
choose the XP screen appears, tries to start and kicks me
back to this page. Do I have a virus or something? Any
help would be appreciated.

What recent changes did you make to your computer before this problem
suddenly appeared?

Tom,

I've made no changes other than to scan with Norton and
remove the indicated virus, which I cannot tell you the
name. My son, 10 year old, just told me that he was
using the system the other day and Norton indicated there
was virus and it could not fix. I have also put in the
XP disk and nothing happens.

The virus didn't get there by itself. Some viruses are extremely difficult
to remove, and even when they are removed they can leave your system in a
bad state. That seems to be the case for you. If you know the name of the
virus you can ask Symantec technical support for advice on repairing the
damage it causes. Otherwise, you can try repairing Windows XP, as described
here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341&Product=winxp.

If that doesn't help, you may have to backup your data and perform a clean
install of all your software.

I should probably stop right here, but I have to add this: You should review
your configuration choices in NAV. If NAV is properly configured for maximum
protection, and you update your virus signatures often, the chances of your
computer being infected by a virus are virtually nil.
