Ben

My installation and scanning went smoothly. However, as
soon as I start browsing again, the homepage is back
to "about blank" and popups are arriving once again.
There must be someone at Microsoft who can outsmart the
hackers. Microsoft, please help!

Ben,

Click Tools, Suspected Spyware Report, and submit it to Spynet.

If you can't wait for the definitions to be updated, advise you
to go to Folder Options in the Control Panel, click View, put a check
next to Show hidden files and folders, UNcheck Hide extensions for known
file types and Hide protected operating system files. Click Apply, then OK.

Scan the system with MSAS. When done reboot to Safe Mode:

Empty your <User> Temp folder by going to Start, Run, and typing in
%temp%
Click OK.
Now go to Internet Options in the Control Panel, click the Delete Files
button under Temporary Internet Files. Put a check in the box next to
Delete all offline content. Click OK.
Empty the Recycle Bin.

Scan once more. Reboot to Normal mode and scan once more.

If the issue persists advise you to go to one of these forums, prior to
posting, read their guidelines first :

Ben,
You should open up Microsoft Anti-Spyware and click on Tools / Submit
Spyware Report and go through that process. After doing that, reboot your
PC to safe mode and run a scan in safemode. Does not always work, but
depending on the type of spyware it will sometimes remove in safe mode.

Although this really isn't a forum for how to remove
spyware I thought I would mention a possible solution to
the aboutblank issue.

There are variations of this but from what you are stating
it sounds like you have the version that installs
nettim32.exe as a service. Check your services. If you
are not on a network you can remove the service in safe
mode which then will allow you to delete the exe that re-
registers the .dll file which causes the aboutblank issue.

Cheers
