I just got a trojan horse virus that my security symantec
software will not get rid of. It's called Trojan.StartPage

My antivirus software can identify it, but it won't get
rid of it. I tried to follow the instructions on removing
it from the windows registry, but there's no reference to
it in the registry. The data on the virus said that I
should delete whatever file it infected. (pfe.dll) The
system won't let me delete the file. In addition, it
tells me to go to the windows registry and edit out any
file that references the infected file. There is no
reference.

Does anyone have any ideas?

First try booting to safe mode and see if you can
delete the DLL.

If that doesn't work, if your boot partition is FAT and
not NTFS you can boot off a Win98/DOS floppy and
delete the file directly from DOS. There may be more
than one occurance of the file on your drive(s).

If nothing else works you'll need to go through your
registry and find the service, driver or other reference(s)
to the trojan. It's in there somewhere. Go through this
list of registry locations one at a time until you find it:
