Fred

I can't figure out how this is possible, as I am
running a Compaq 5420us
100Gb Hard drive-1-80gb 1-20Gb ata100 7200rpm
Athlon 1.7 Processor 1.5gb
100gb pc133 SDRAM

Task Manager says I have 52 Processes running at Startup,
and if I open just a Few Programs, or on-line, 5 or so
websites, and try to save something to say, Wordpad, or
MSWord, it says my Memory is too low---How can this BE????

Can I delete some of the Processes that run at startup,
and what Programs can I NOT Delete from the Startup???

Thanks in Advance

If you have 100gb (gigabyte not megabyte) memory you should not be running
out of memory. You should start by making sure all the memory is being
recognised by Windows. Do a ctrl + alt + del which brings up the task
manager. Go to the performance tab and see how much physical memory is
shown. You can then look at the process tab and see what process is using
all the memory. I have two computers running XP Pro one has 512mb the other
has 384mb and neither has ever run out of memory and I work with large
graphics etc. Most of the time Windows just caches the memory but XPs memory
management is so good it releases it when needed. You might have a memory
leak which should show up in task manager process tab as a program using a
massive amount of memory. If you find a program is using too much memory
make sure the program is XP compatible or look for any upgrade patches on
the makers web site. Repost with any relevent info.

Just to show you what this computer is using it has 384mb pc133 memory
installed. I have 42 processes running and over 200 mb free memory with 28
mb cached. I leave the page file as sytem managed on both my computers and
never had a problem. I have two internet servers running 24/7 and the
computer is only a Pentium 3 733mhz and it runs fine. I monitor memory
constantly with both task manager and Norton system doctor with appropriate
sensors.

as said - one, it is not possible for you to have 100gb of memory..lol -
maybe 100mb, but even still, that is not possble unless you have a built in
video card which uses a weird amount of ram.

if you ONLY have 100mb of memory or less then yes, since XP uses anywhere
from 100-128mb or so of ram JUST to run itself.

go to Control Panel - System - and right there it will say the amoutn of
memory you have, under your CPU speed and such.

There's a mistype in here somewhere..... 100gb RAM????? I doubt it. Most
motherboards will support up to 3gb but that's for DDR not for PC133. You
might be able to get 1.5gb (3 x 512mb sticks) with SDR but that's about it.

52 processes at startup?

Have you tried Start, Run (type) MSCONFIG (enter) and unchecking some of the
programs running at startup that you don't need running in the background?

I have currently 36 processes running..... that's including antivirus, seti
at home, setispy, Outlook Express, Outlook, 3 x IE, my IIS webserver, the XP
wallpaper changer, threat.exe, etc etc.

I have 512mb PC133 RAM and all is fine.

For what's running in the MSCONFIG files, see
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm#Select

You can uncheck stuff like Real Player, Quicktime, Roxio stuff etc etc...
they will still start when you launch the application but won't run in the
background at startup.

Remember...he said it was a Compaq. They do use intergrated video on several of
their boards and if the BIOS is set to share 28MB, then this would work out
right.

It's funny how the mind sees things. I took it to mean 1 gb not even
thinking about 100 gb.
