Dan

I am having an issue with an HP laptop running XP Home.
After joining a workgroup, the system will not shut down
until I manually disconnect the network cable or eject
the wireless card from the laptop. It just hangs on
the "Windows is shutting down" screen. As soon as I
disconnect the cable, the computer shuts down right
away. What is causing this and how do I fix it?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Most likely it will be a bios update, or HP driver update

HP is notorious for this problem on many systems since win 95
