I am making a phone list that has a one-row table in the header
(possessing descriptive information), and a larger table in the body
of the document (possessing names and telephone numbers). This is all
the document consists of.

The one row in the header takes up only one row of space, which is one
row height, yet the header is easily twice that height, with the extra
space falling after the one row. I need that extra space between
where the header ends, and the other table in the body of the document
begins, in order to keen the document within the desired length, which
is four pages. I don't know how to recover that lost space.
Modifying margins for either the body or the header/footer does
nothing to help, stuff just gets funky when I try that.

How do I make my header shorter? I only need it to be one table-row
high.

Hi, Fun Guy.

Word always puts an empty paragraph after a table. You can see the paragraph mark if you click on the ¶ button (Show/Hide) on the Standard toolbar. If you format the paragraph mark after the table as "hidden" (select the paragraph mark, then click on Format | Font | Hidden), the extra space in the header will disappear.

An alternative method to putting the table heading in the header of the document is to put it in the main body of the document as the first row(s) of your table. Make the table heading row(s) automatically repeat on every page by selecting the row(s) and clicking on Table | Heading Rows Repeat.

Thanks, your first idea did the trick. If my header table had the
same structure as the one in the body (same # of columns) I'd do your
second suggestion. Still need to come up with something for next
month, when the list will grow again but the desire to keep it at 4
pages will continue...
