Help With XP

All of a sudden, I cannot open many windows
applications. I cannot open Explorer, My Computer, My
Documents, or any other file like that. I can get to
those files only if I use the SBC Yahoo Explorer browser
only. If I try to open Explorer using the regular icon,
I get the same result as the other files; I get the hour
glass, all my icons on the desktop and the toolbar
disappears, and then instead of opening the file, the
icons come back as well as the tool bar. Please help,

Do a complete scan for virus with up to date antivirus software.
