I think I have far too many programs running under the Processes tab of the
Task Manager. Some are obvious, but it is the mystery ones I need help with.
Is there any way of easily figuring out which programs are necessary, and
which are not?
Thanks in advance.

Click Start - Run - type MSCONFIG and press Enter. Click the Startup tab and
uncheck the program that you think are not necessary when your system boot
up. Further, uncheck those programs as well that you don't need in your
System Tray.

Hope this information helps you, let us know!

Thanks. That helped clear out most of the clutter. Basically trashed
anything not labelled as a Microsoft product.

Win XP Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This utility tracks the common
startup vectors and will show you what is loading at startup and from where. The
included Help gives a brief tutorial with some good information on removing the
entries that the program finds.
