how do I install hotfixes on a slightly altered version of the above???
help appreciated

You need to clarify what you mean by "slightly altered version".
The Windows Update website only works with the "released" version
of Windows XP, build 2600.

Are you seeing this message when you try to install the hotfixes
"Service Pack 1 Setup Error The product key used to install Windows is
invalid. Please contact your system administrator or retailer immediately to
obtain a valid product key. You may also contact Microsoft Corporation's
Anti-Piracy Team by emailing (e-mail address removed) if you think you have
purchased pirated Microsoft software. Please be assured that any personal
information you send to the Microsoft Anti-Piracy team will be kept in
strict confidence."

If so you will need to make your installation valid. You have several
options for doing so. All involve purchasing a legitimate Product Key.
1) Download and run this little app
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/keyfinder.exe It will display your current
Product Key. You can go to Options and change the key by entering your new
legitimate Windows XP Professional key. Then reboot. Hotfixes should now
install just fine. You can not use a Windows XP Home version key for this
though.
2) Run a Repair Install of Windows XP Pro entering a legitimate Product Key
overtop of your current setup. A Repair Install will not cause data loss
when done correctly. You can not use XP Home version to run overtop of XP
Pro.
3) Do a clean install of a legitimate version of XP. You can use either XP
Pro or XP Home version but will lose all data on your drive when you do a
clean install.
