Hello everyone:

I have a problem. When I bougth my computer 2 years ago, when I turn it on, it loaded in no time. But now it takes about 3 minutes only to finish loading. It also takes more time to open folders and other "ligthed" stuff. I gues the folder thing can be fixed by desfragmenting it, but I dont think the start up delay will be fix. I guess the problem is that a lot of programs start up at the same time the computer gets turn on. So, how can I make the programs to stop starting at the same time that the computer? I really apreciate your answer, and if you think another thing is the real problem, please let me know it.

Joe,

There are many things you can do with a 2-year old computer to make it
faster.

1) By all means, defrag the hard drive. If it's 2 years old and
hasn't been done, empty the recycle bin, then defrag.
2) A system bought 2 years old, and worth keeping, is worth more
memory. Double the amount of memory. Prices are way down, and will
give you noticeable improvement in performance.
3) Secure yourself against viruses. You should have a current
antivirus program, if not, get one immediately. And use and update it
regularly and religiously.
4) Secure yourself against spyware (not the same as viruses). Get
Spybot S&D and HijackThis (both free). This article contains all the
information you need:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=5187
5) Get a bigger hard drive. As in #2, prices are way down. Consider
creating separate partitions for the system and data, which will give
better performance.
6) Identify what you're starting automatically. Both Spybot and
HijackThis contain tools to identify startup programs, and the folks
at SWI Forums (#4) will help you identify what you don't need to have
running at startup.
7) Become aware of what your computer is doing. Get a packet scanner
and process monitor. I use Port Explorer
<http://www.diamondcs.com.au/portexplorer/index.php?page=home> and
Process Explorer
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml> (both
free). Port Explorer will help you see what network traffic is
active, what outside computers are generating the traffic, and what
process is supporting the traffic. Process Explorer will help you
identify a suspicious process, and verify its components.

Cheers,

Chuck

Since you don't mention problems beyond being slow you
could have spyware or insufficient ram or ???. You should
run defrag (My Computer / right click on the drive /
properties / tools / Defragment Now). Have you downloaded
and installed all Microsoft updates?

Have you run a virus scan that has up to date (within 1
week) definitions? If not check out

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

and run it weekly. Other things to try:

Ad Aware and SpyBot find and remove spyware - both can be
located via a Google search. Use daily.

Other tips and tune-ups (and interesting comments) may be
found at

The menu in the left column has FAQ. After checking threr
click "OS Guides", and select your operating system.
