hey guys and gals,

This is my first post in this group so would appreciate any help on this
problem. I have windows XP home and used the control userpasswords2 to just
kinda look around and see what it was capable of without messing with my
account at all. Problem is after i exited out of the utility and restarted
the computer my account dissappeared and had somehow gotten added to the
Guests group....now normally i know it is possible to actually revert this
setting in XP professional, but i have yet to find a solution to this
problem for XP home. I am able to login to the account through the clssic
logon prompt, howver if i try to make any system changes while logged on it
will of course pop up and say i need administrator priviliges. Please if
anyone has any clue on fixing this issue it would be much appreciated.

TIA,
Mike Castro

Tried this already, my account doesnt even show up in the user accounts
control panel and does not show up in control userpasswords2 control panel
either.

Login as administrator NOT your usual account. If you installed XP you
were asked for a password, if you just pressed enter, do that now.
Mike.

Already tried that, if i try o login to administrator in normal mode it wont
let me cause it says theres an account restriction, but it will let me login
to administrator in safe mode. hwever i cant really do anything from there
either as XP home stupidly doesnt allow you to use the local users and
groups snap in to change user accounts.

Will it let you System Restore in Safe Mode? Go to before problem.
Mike.

thanks for all the suggestions guys but i found a solution already and for
anyone else having this same problem heres the solution on how to get
yourself back into the administrator group and restore your account. go to
the command prompt (doesnt matter if its in safe mode or normal), then in
the dos prompt type "net localgroup user /add". Make sure and put what
group you want to be added to after localgroup and replace user with your
actual username, this is basically the way you use local users and groups
management in XP home edition.

Glad you got it, seems strange to me that the GUI from safe mode did not
allow you to make the change and you had to use a command line to accomplish
this.

Hey Michael,

I am having the same problem as of two days ago, noticed it when half
my programs stopped working - telling me i had to have admin access
privileges. I tried the comand prompt thing, but I don't understand
what you meant by "Make sure and put what group you want to be added
to after localgroup and replace user with your actual username." I
typed "net localgroup William Howard /add". Do I need to stick
"administrator" in there somewhere? I have fooled with it for a while,
typing in a lot of different things. Most of the time I received
"system error 5 has occured {next line} access denied". Although when
I typed "net localgroup" it returned saying "aliases for \\BILLY" and
then listed "administrators, guests, help service group, {etc.}" I am
kinda stuck. Can you give me the example you used? Or possibly
diagnose what I am doing wrong. Thanks for your help.

Billy

Phew!!!

Fixed My Own Problem.

Here's the fix...
Boot in safe mode, log off, log on as "administrator", i did not type a
password (I am not sure if this will always work but give it a try).
Now goto control panel, user accounts, create new account (with
administrator privileges). restart, log off, log on to the new account
you just created. Goto Run. Type "control userpasswords2". Now check
the box that says "users must enter password..." click on the account
you want to give administrator access to. click properties and change
to administrator access. Problem Fixed.

That's good.

Next time, for more specific help with Windows, I would post in a
Windows group. There are lots.

Have fun.

Hi I had a similiar problem, I created an account in control
userpasswords2 in xp home & changed type. The account then disappeared
in user accounts & userpasswords2 but could still be used at login. As
I wanted to use account name but have it displayed at the welcome page
I simply did the following -

At command prompt

net localgroup test /add
net localgroup test Philip add (where philip is user name)

User now reappers in user accounts

Hope this helps
Keith
